The MK2 is the latest iteration of the lower vang from Harken. All sheaves have been redesigned with a larger diameter for increased power and wider profiles to reduce friction, allowing the unit to better handle today’s higher vang loads.
Despite these improvements, the MK2 is 21% lighter than the current stainless version, thanks to its construction from Harken’s proven Carbo Nylon-Reinforced composite material.
The entire unit has also been made more aerodynamic, helping prevent interference with the cunningham or outhaul control lines.
All sheaves are Harken Fly blocks with stainless bearings running in stainless races, ensuring smooth, reliable operation under load.
The final turn before the Micro Cam-Matic cleat now uses a lightweight stainless ferrule, replacing the fairlead used in earlier designs. The cleating angle matches the existing standard, though an integrated wedge allows sailors to experiment with alternative angles if desired.
The system’s design also anticipates that sailors may wish to reduce the amount of line in the cockpit by lowering the purchase. The vang can be easily converted from 15:1 to 12:1—and back again—without difficulty.
